In 1961 Bill interrupted his schooling to serve as a missionary of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Central Atlantic States mission. On July 23, 1974 he married Susan Stucklen in the Logan LDS Temple.
While he was in Chicago Bill worked for the Chicago Sun-Times as an editor and part-time music critic. He also helped establish and teach at the university's Institute of Religion for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. With his experience as an editor, he was encouraged to apply for a position with the Deseret News as a music critic, which position he received and filled for the ensuing 21 years. He was heard broadcasting classical music on KWHO (Wyoming) and later taught journalism courses at Brigham Young University.
On January 23, 2013, Bill passed away at the age of 71.
