Richard Paul Anderson received his bachelor's degree in music education from Arizona State University. He then received a master's degree in piano performance from Northwestern University and his doctorate degree in performance, pedagogy and research from the University of Colorado.

Anderson taught at the Brigham Young University School of Music for over 35 years. In September 2012, he advanced to a full professor. As a faculty member, he taught private lessons as well as courses related to piano pedagogy, music theory and composition.

After many years of dedicated instruction, Anderson retired at the end of spring term 2016.
