Richard Doutré Jones graduated from Brigham Young University in 1975 with a degree in Advertising, after which he he completed a graduate internship at Columbia University.

Jones grew up in California and is a longtime television executive. His broadcasting career is extensive and includes local and national sales, station operations, programming, and management positions. In 1983 he began his career in San Fransisco as a local and national Sales Manager for KBCW/CW-CBS. After his success in that position he was promoted to General Sales and Station Manager. In 2001 Jones went to San Diego and created a Joint Market Partnership Agreement that combined several TV stations into Bay City Television, Inc. With the changes he made as the new stations' VP and General Manager, he created Emmy-award winning news operations and, in less than one year, took the stations from negative cash-flow operations to positive. He then created his own broadcast group (Jones Broadcast Group) and operated RDJ Global.

Jones has been a guest lecturer at BYU and at universities all over California. For many years he also served as the Chairman of the Bay Area Black Media Coalition, UPN Sales Advisory Committee, and Nor-Cal Communication Committee for Public Affairs.

In January 2013 Jones was named General Manager at Channels 4 (KTVX) and 30 (KUCW) in Salt Lake City.
