After graduating from BYU, John worked for a public relations firm in Washington D.C. and also worked for Waterford Institute, an educational software company based in Salt Lake City, Utah. He then returned to BYU as an adjunct professor primarily of advertising and PR methods, but also strategic communications and research methods. While teaching at BYU, he was also an adjunct professor at the University of Utah. He became the Director of the Eye-Tracking Lab in the Brimhall Building at BYU.
In 2017, John was featured in the Y News with a study on how to better identify cancerous moles.
