Christie K. Sowby graduated from Brigham Young University in 2009 with a bachelor's degree in piano performance. She then completed a master's degree in music in 2012.

Sowby, along with Desiree Gonzalez, is a BYU Chapter President of the Music Teachers' National Association. In January of 2012, the pair had the opportunity, along with their professor, Scott Holden, to attend and present at the National Symposium of Piano Pedagogy, held at the University of Michigan. The team's presentation and Dr. Holden's masterclass were well-received and BYU was asked to host the symposium in 2013.
